Mixed media has always been an interest but I have not known how to really get going with this, until I read an article in an old Stampers Sampler (Vol 17:Issue1) Dec/Jan 2010 the work featured by Karen Fullerton which introduced me to the work of Laurie Mika (Mixed Media Mosaics)and it was like turning a light on. I immediately went out and purchased some sculpey to play with.
The canvas was painted black prior to making the tiles. I drew out a template to match the size of the canvas I was going to use and stamped the stamps on to a sheet of paper as a draft, as I was not sure how it was all going to fit together size wise or how the stamps would come together.
Some of the tiles were blank and cooked this way so that I could stamp and colour them. Some of the tiles were stamped prior to cooking so that the impression was pushed/embossed into the Sculpey clay. I then used Pearl Ex colours I had to colour the impressions and then baked the tiles in the oven at the recommended temperature/time.Once the tiles were cooked and cool they were laid out on the canvas to make sure everything fit. Where there was a wee gap I glued little beads in to cover these up. Here you can see the bird and butter fly were a couple of the tiles that were stamped onto the Sculpey and then painted with Mungyo watercolour crayons. I stamped a saying onto some cardstock and some butterflies ( Tim Holtz) to go in the spaces left and then glued all the tiles and card to the canvas
